The Millennium Challenge Corporation ("MCC") and the Government of Tanzania created the Millennium Challenge Compact for Millennium Challenge Account assistance to help facilitate poverty reduction through economic growth in Tanzania.
Symbion formed a consortium with the French firm, Alstom, to execute this project over four phases. The project’s overall objective was to improve the reliability of the Tanzanian transmission and distribution system. The work augmented and rehabilitated the existing transmission and distribution system, thereby providing the Tanzanian people with employment opportunities and important skills.
The were many complexities to this project due to multiple sites spread over Tanzania and Zanzibar, each with diverse needs and considerations, (Greenfield, Brownfield, extensions of existing substations and rehabilitation of existing substations). The project required extensive logistical planning to accommodate aggressive project schedules as well as vendor delays and limited entry ports for substation construction. Material and resource shortages due to increased construction activities in Tanzania also posed a challenge.
A systematic approach based on previous experience and a careful selection process of sub-contractors and suppliers along with training ensured the successful delivery of this project.
